Chapter History

Our chapter was proudly chartered on May 21, 1949, during the Fourth National Jack and Jill Convention at the Hotel Theresa in New York City. As the nineteenth chapter of the organization, our founding members, including Evelyn Anderson, Anne Bromley, Mildred Carr, and others, laid the foundation for a vibrant community dedicated to intelligent programming, cultural appreciation, community service, and lifelong fellowship. In 1990, we expanded our reach and became the Gary/Northwest Indiana Chapter, welcoming dynamic mothers from nearby counties. Our mission is to create innovative and inspiring programming that broadens horizons, enhances intellect, fosters community service, and promotes cultural awareness for all children. Our signature programs, like JJ Swim scholarships and Y-Day, Fun Day, along with our partnerships for environmental beautification and literacy promotion, exemplify our dedication to making a positive impact in our community. Our chapter also boasts a strong Associate Jewel group and an active Father's Auxiliary, with programs like Doughnuts with Dads, creating nurturing spaces for fathers and sons. We continually address important topics through our Candid Conversations series, raising awareness about issues such as breast health, mental health, and Black maternal health. Our commitment to community service and engagement has led us to collaborate with other organizations, hosting events like the “Fitness Under the BigTop” carnival and charity golf tournaments. Over the years, we've raised significant funds to support local initiatives, from schools to financial literacy conferences. Our chapter's influence extends beyond our community, with members holding regional offices and hosting regional events. Notable milestones include hosting the 2005 Regional Mothers Conference and mentoring the Greater Northeast Indiana chapter to official status in 2018. We celebrate our achievements and milestones with enthusiasm, from our 45th Anniversary gala to our 70th Anniversary jazz luncheon. As we celebrate seventy-five years of dynamic programming and meaningful community engagement, we are proud of our rich history and ongoing contributions to the Midwestern region.

History of Jack and Jill

Our journey began in January 1938 when Marion Stubbs Thomas gathered twenty-one mothers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a vision to create a social and cultural union for their children. This initiative laid the foundation for an organization dedicated to preparing its members for adulthood by instilling valuable leadership qualities. By 1939, our reach expanded with the establishment of chapters in New York City and Washington, D.C.This vision quickly took root, and by 1939, we had expanded to include chapters in New York City and Washington, D.C. Since then, we've grown tremendously, boasting 262 chapters nationwide and representing over 50,000 family members.

Each chapter plans monthly and annual activities focused on cultural awareness, educational development, health education and advocacy, civic engagement, and social/recreational areas. Through service projects, educational programming, and community events, we provide a platform for children to grow and thrive. Our efforts also include promoting public awareness and the interests of African American youth including their development, quality of life, and rights.
